A large, late-19th/early-20th-century steam traction engine with a flat canopy roof, vertical boiler and chimney, exposed drive train and large spoked metal rear drive wheels. The rear wheel has deep cleated treads and radial spokes; the front steering wheels are smaller and also spoked. Two men are present on the machine and provide scale: the operator standing on the left platform at the controls appears to be an adult male approximately 40–55 years old, medium-to-stocky build, wearing a patterned jacket and a cap; his face is shown in three-quarter profile so facial details are partially visible (short hair, sideburns or short moustache may be present but not fully resolved). The second man standing at the rear platform is an adult male approximately 30–50 years old, lean to medium build, wearing a long dark coat and a bowler-style hat; he is in profile/turned away so facial detail is indistinct. The full steam traction engine appears within the frame and no major locomotive components (boiler, main chassis, both large rear wheels, canopy and chimney) are cropped by the photo edges.
