1880s Railroad Worker with Shovel

A wiry track labourer swinging a long-handled shovel low across his body, caught mid-stroke with both arms extended and his weight on the back foot. He wears a flat cap, a collarless work shirt with the sleeves rolled up, an open waistcoat with a neckerchief, and heavy denim trousers over scuffed lace boots.

The clothing and tool are pure late nineteenth century gang labour, suited to shovelling ballast, coal or spoil.

Drop him into a track-laying gang on a period railroad layout, a construction cutting, a mine yard or a frontier town street scene. Several of these read very well as a working crew.
