A hard-rock miner from the 1880s braced in a working stance, one hand steadying a length of drill steel while the other swings a short single-jack hammer. He wears a soft cloth cap fitted with a brass lamp bracket, a red plaid flannel shirt, denim bib overalls with visible tool pockets, and heavy laced work boots.

The weathered face, rolled sleeves and planted feet all read as a man deep in a drift face rather than a posed portrait.
