A bearded nineteenth-century mine blacksmith caught mid-stroke, hammer drawn back in one hand and a drill steel held ready in the other. His stance is braced and his shoulders are rolled forward into the swing.
He wears a soft cloth cap with a small lamp fixed at the front, a dark work shirt with the sleeves pushed up, braces over a grimed collarless top, heavy trousers and stout laced boots. The whole figure is toned in soot and iron dust.
Suited to an 1880s hard-rock mining scene: set him at an underground smithy sharpening drill steels, beside a forge in a surface shop, or in a mining camp diorama alongside ore cars and timbering.
