1900s Street Newspaper Vendor

A turn-of-the-century newspaper seller calling out the headline, mouth open mid-shout and one hand raised holding a folded coin or paper. His other arm cradles a bundle of rolled newspapers against the shoulder. He wears a bowler hat, a long dark overcoat left open over a buttoned waistcoat, a knotted tie and worn trousers with heavy boots.

The coat has sculpted pocket flaps and turned lapels, and the newspaper bundle is modelled as individual rolled sheets so a light drybrush picks out each one. The figure stands on a small cobbled base that blends straight into a paved street.

He belongs on an Edwardian or early-1900s Main Street, outside a station entrance on a period railroad layout, or in a busy market-day diorama alongside shoppers and hansom traffic.
