A mid-century underground miner standing at ease with a control lever in his raised hand, wearing a lamp-fitted hard hat, an olive work shirt and trousers, a broad leather tool belt and heavy laced boots.

He represents the hoistman who ran the cage and skip winder, so he belongs at a shaft head, an engine house doorway, or a mine adit on a 1950s industrial layout.
