1880s Logging Camp Cook with Ladle

A weathered old camp cook standing over an unseen pot, right hand holding a long-handled metal ladle out in front of him while the left hand is raised as though about to lift a lid. His grey moustache and stubble, deep-set frown and rolled sleeves make him read instantly as the man who runs the cookhouse.

He wears a green knitted watch cap, a blue chambray work shirt buttoned to the chest, leather braces, and a heavy canvas apron stained with grease and stitched with a big front pocket. Wool trousers are cuffed into thick socks above scuffed lace-up work boots.

Made for an 1880s logging camp scene: a cookhouse doorway, a mess tent, a chuck wagon, or a stove-side interior vignette. He is equally at home in a mining camp, a railroad construction gang, or any frontier work site where the crew has to be fed.
