A single-storey timber bunkhouse raised on brick pier footings, with a steep corrugated metal roof carried forward over a full-width covered porch. Turned posts support the porch roof, and a plank step leads up to the boards at the front.
The walls are vertical board-and-batten with a tall brick chimney stack climbing the gable end. Windows are fitted with small-pane sashes and hinged board shutters, there are two plank doors onto the porch, and the porch itself is furnished with a bench, a small side table and a stack of crates against the wall.
A building like this housed hired hands on ranches and farms across the American south and west from the nineteenth century well into the twentieth. Set it behind a barn, at the edge of a stock yard, or on its own down a dirt track as a backwoods cabin. It works as a rural building on a layout, a homestead in a western diorama, and a defensible objective on a skirmish table.
