A classic farmstead water-pumping windmill: a multi-blade fan wheel and a broad rectangular tail vane mounted at the top of a tapered four-leg lattice tower. The blades are set at a pitch on a spoked hub, and the tail keeps the wheel turned into the wind.
The tower is fully open-framed, with cross-braced girts on every face, a small maintenance platform and ladder rungs partway up, and a square footplate with cast anchor blocks at each leg. The metalwork is weathered with chalky, sun-faded paint and rust bleeding through at the joints.
These stood on farms across the American plains and the Australian outback from the late nineteenth century onwards, and one is instantly readable as rural landscape. Place it beside a stock tank, a barnyard or a homestead on a layout, or use it as a tall landmark and vantage point on a western, dust-bowl or post-apocalyptic tabletop.
