A stout Victorian-era fireman braced with both hands on the rim of a checkered canvas life net, ready to catch a jumper. He wears a long red wool turnout coat with brass buttons and a broad leather belt, blue work trousers tucked into tall brown boots, and a black leather helmet with a front shield and brass eagle finial.

The net is a stitched grid of cloth panels laced to a rope-bound ring, and his moustache, jowls and coat creases are cut deep enough to read clearly at layout size. He stands on a plain round stone disc.

Pair him with a second net-holder for a rescue tableau beneath a burning tenement, or use him alongside a hand-drawn steam pumper on an 1880s American or European city street scene.
