1880s Firefighter Carrying a Rescued Child

A nineteenth-century fireman striding out of danger with a limp child cradled across both arms. He wears the dark blue double-breasted wool tunic with two rows of brass buttons, a wide leather belt, blue trousers and tall brown leather boots, under a long-backed leather helmet with a numbered front shield.

The child hangs loose in a pale nightshirt, one arm dropped, which gives the piece its weight. His jaw is set and his eyes are fixed ahead rather than on the bundle he is carrying.

The figure stands on a cobblestone base, so it drops straight into a Victorian street. Use it in front of a burning tenement, beside a steam pumper or at a hose line on any 1870s-to-1900s town scene where the fire has already done its damage.
