An ice angler stands over a drilled hole and snaps a short jigging rod upward with both hands, setting the hook on a fish below. The upward sweep of the rod and the tilt of his head give the little scene a clear moment of action.
He is dressed for hard cold in a quilted orange parka with a green fleece hood beneath, a pink knit beanie, matching fingerless gloves and heavy insulated jeans over lace-up snow boots. The base is a snow-and-slush pad set on blue ice, with the round auger hole cut through it.
The kit around his feet completes the story: a hand ice auger laid on its side with the blade still snowy, a plastic bucket, a wooden tackle box and a small tip-up flag rig. Drop the whole vignette onto a frozen lake on a winter layout, a north-woods diorama, or a seasonal display beside a shanty and a parked snowmobile.
