1880s Underground Miner Swinging a Pick

A Victorian-era hard-rock miner caught mid-swing, both hands wrapped around the haft of a long pick raised back over his shoulder. His weight is braced on a wide stance, head turned into the strike and face set with effort.

He wears the working dress of the 1880s pit: a soft cloth cap with a lamp bracket at the front, a collarless work shirt with sleeves shoved up past the elbows, heavy trousers held by a belt, and hobnailed boots. The clothing is sculpted with wear, sagging and grime around the knees and cuffs. He stands on a small round base cast as broken rock spoil.

He suits a mining scene of almost any kind: a silver or gold drift, a coal seam cutaway, a quarry face, or an ore-loading area at a mine head. On a layout he brings life to a mining branch line or a stamp-mill complex, and he works as a rugged frontier civilian in old-west and industrial-age dioramas.
