1880s Mine Timberman with Prop Beam

An underground timberman heaving a squared wooden prop up against his shoulder, head turned upward to line it into place. He wears a soft cloth cap with a small open flame lamp clipped to the brow, a blue work shirt rolled at the sleeves, braces over the chest and heavy leather trousers scuffed at the knee.

The beam is cut with visible grain, a bolt hole and chipped ends, and his stance is braced wide with laced work boots planted on a gritty round base.

A strong storytelling figure for a nineteenth-century coal or hard-rock mining diorama: a shaft-bottom scene, a timbering gang at a drift entrance, or a mine-head vignette on an industrial-era layout.
