1880s Underground Miner with Water Pail

A working miner strides forward carrying a wooden stave bucket by its bail handle. He wears a soft canvas cap fitted with a small flame lamp at the brow, a faded blue work shirt with rolled sleeves, heavy trousers held by braces, and scuffed lace-up boots caked in mine dirt.

The bucket and the lamp mark him out as the water carrier who kept a working face supplied, a job usually given to a young or older hand. Stains and wear are sculpted into the cloth, so he sits well beside timbered shaft heads, ore carts and tipple structures.

Suited to a Victorian coal or hard-rock mining diorama, an 1880s industrial layout, or a company-town street scene.
