1880s Lumberjack on a Springboard

A nineteenth-century logger balanced on a springboard plank wedged into a stump, felling axe hauled back over his shoulder for the next stroke. He wears a knitted watch cap, a plaid flannel shirt with rolled sleeves, canvas braces over frayed-cuff denim trousers and heavy hobnail-style laced boots.

The wide-braced stance across the narrow board is the whole point of the piece: it captures the old-growth technique of chopping above the flared butt of a huge tree. Shirt folds, brace buckles, cuffed hems and the tapered axe haft are all cut in as separate surfaces.

Made for a 1880s logging scene: a felling site with stumps and slash, a skid road, a log landing or a sawmill yard. On a layout he suits a logging branch, a log dump or a company camp, and he pairs well with cross-cut saws, oxen teams and log cars.
