A gold prospector of the 1880s standing over a muddy patch of creek bank, hauling up a bucket on a short rope with one hand while steadying the bail with the other. The pose captures the endless grind of bailing water off a claim rather than any romantic strike-it-rich moment.

He wears a battered slouch hat with a soft turned brim, a work shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow, braces over heavy canvas trousers and mud-caked lace-up boots. His clothing is streaked with dried silt and the base beneath him is sculpted as churned wet ground.

He fits any Old West or frontier mining scene: a placer claim on a stream bend, a sluice run, a hydraulic cut, or a rough camp on the edge of a boom town. On a layout he adds life to a mining branch, and in a diorama he anchors a gold-rush vignette alongside tents, pans and hand tools.
