A Victorian-era railroad construction labourer standing braced with his feet apart, swinging a long-handled pick down across his body as he breaks ground on a new grade.

He is dressed in the working kit of the period: a flat cloth cap, a blue collarless shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a red neckerchief, a buttoned work vest, heavy brown canvas trousers held by braces, and scuffed leather boots, with a full beard and a weathered face.

He is supplied on a round base of broken dirt and stone chips, so he drops straight into a cut-and-fill grading gang, a tie-laying scene, or a construction camp beside a 19th-century line.
