1880s Railroad Worker with Rail Tongs

A lean nineteenth-century track labourer bends into his work with a long pair of rail tongs gripped in both hands. He wears a soft green flat cap, a collarless shirt with the sleeves rolled above the elbow, a brown waistcoat left open, a red neckerchief, heavy blue trousers held at the waist and scuffed leather ankle boots.

The stance is a working one: knees bent, weight back on the heels, shoulders rolled forward as if lifting one end of a rail into place. Two of these figures face to face will carry a length of rail between them.

He belongs on an 1870s-to-1900s construction scene, a branch-line extension, a yard relaying gang or a frontier townsite where the track is still going down. Also usable as a general labourer on any late Victorian industrial diorama.
