1880s Rail Gang Water Carrier

A nineteenth-century construction labourer walking a line with a galvanised water bucket swinging from one hand and a battered tin dipper cup held out in the other. He wears a flat cap, a collarless work shirt with rolled sleeves, braces over a buttoned waistcoat, heavy trousers and scuffed boots, with a neckerchief knotted at the throat.

Details sell the job: the bucket has a wire bail handle and a dented, stained body, the cup has a riveted handle, and the trousers are worn pale at the knee. He walks with an easy stride on a plain ground pad dotted with stones.

The perfect small character for a period railroad construction scene, where the water boy was as constant a presence as the spike mauls. He also fits a quarry, a brickyard, a canal cutting or any Victorian labour gang diorama.
