1880s Railroad Worker with Tool Crate

A nineteenth-century railroad construction hand shouldering a wooden tool crate. He wears a soft flat cap, a blue collarless work shirt with the sleeves rolled past the elbow, a brown waistcoat, canvas trousers held by suspenders and scuffed leather boots.

One arm is raised to steady the crate against his shoulder while the other swings free, so he reads as a man walking a grade rather than posing. A neckerchief is knotted at the throat, a detail typical of gang labour in the 1880s.

Ideal for a narrow gauge or transcontinental construction scene, a tie and rail gang beside a work train, or the yard of a period engine house on a Victorian-era layout.
