Railroad Grading Worker with Pickaxe

A track-building labourer braced in a wide stance with a pickaxe swung up over his shoulder, both hands on the haft and his eyes fixed on the ground ahead. He wears a soft flat cap, a rolled-sleeve blue work shirt with a yellow neckerchief knotted at the throat, and heavy brown trousers held up by braces over worn lace-up boots.

The clothing is plain nineteenth-century working dress with no uniform or insignia, and the pick is a full-size grading tool rather than a light hand pick. He is caught at the top of the swing, which gives the figure real energy in a group.

Built for a railroad construction scene: cutting a grade, tamping a new roadbed, or breaking rock for ballast. Set several together along a survey line with a supervisor, a water barrel and a work train and the whole scene reads as a line under construction.
