A railroad construction labourer of the 1880s braced wide and bent forward, gripping a pair of heavy iron rail tongs in both hands as though lifting a length of rail. The tool's scissor arms, pivot pin and curved jaws are all cleanly modelled between his fists.

He is dressed for hard outdoor work: flat cap, rolled-up blue work shirt with a neckerchief, a worn brown waistcoat with brass buttons, sturdy trousers and tall laced boots. The small scenic base is dressed with cinders, loose ballast stones and tufts of dry grass.

Drop him into a track-laying gang on a frontier or industrial-age layout, a right-of-way construction diorama, or a maintenance-of-way scene beside a work train. He pairs naturally with a second tong man to carry a rail between them.
