A construction hand stands braced in a wide stance, a heavy hammer raised in his right hand and a metal spike or bar steadied in his left. He wears a flat cloth cap, a rolled-sleeve shirt under a buttoned wool waistcoat with a neckerchief, and a long leather work apron over dark trousers and hobnailed boots.
The apron is scarred and darkened from use, and the tensed arms catch the instant before the blow lands. The pose reads clearly whether he is set beside rails and sleepers or at a forge.
Suits an 1880s railway construction diorama, a track gang scene on a period layout, or a Victorian industrial yard.
