An underground coal miner caught mid-swing, driving a long-handled pick up into the roof of a working seam to bring down loose rock. He wears a one-piece canvas coverall, a hard cap with a front-mounted lamp and battery cord running back over the shoulder, strapped knee pads and heavy laced rubber boots caked to the ankle.

The pose is a full stride with both hands on the haft and the head tipped back to watch the cut, so the figure reads as active work rather than a static standing pose. Sleeve rolls, coverall creases and the lamp cable are all modelled, giving plenty of edges to catch a wash.

Built for a 1950s mining scene: a drift mouth, a tipple, a coal loader or an underground cutaway board. On a layout he suits a colliery branch, a mine railroad transfer or a company town setting, and he pairs naturally with mine cars, timber sets and spoil piles.
