Railroad Track Worker with Rail Tongs

A track-gang labourer leans back into the pull, both gloved hands gripping a pair of steel rail tongs as he drags a tie or length of rail across the roadbed. The braced legs and twisted torso capture the effort of the swing, making him read as working rather than posing.

He is kitted out the way a maintenance-of-way crewman was through the 1980s and 1990s: a full-brim hard hat, safety glasses, a denim work jacket over a collared shirt, heavy jeans with a tooled leather belt, thick gauntlet gloves and scuffed lace-up work boots. The tongs are sculpted as a separate articulated tool with visible jaws and pivot.

He belongs on any section of track under repair: a tie-replacement gang beside a ballast car, a siding rebuild, a yard maintenance scene or a road-crossing renewal. Group him with other crewmen, a spike maul and a pile of ties to build a convincing work-train vignette on a layout or diorama.
