A city policeman of the 1880s stands with one arm thrust out, index finger extended, giving a direction or an order to someone off to the side. His moustached face is set and his weight is on the back foot, so the gesture carries real authority.

He wears a spiked leather helmet with a brass front plate and chin scales, a dark blue double-breasted tunic with red piping and a standing collar, and pale grey riding breeches tucked into tall polished laced riding boots. A cross belt over the shoulder and a broad waist belt carry a holstered sidearm and a sheathed sabre, and the coiled leather reins looped through his belt mark him as a mounted officer standing beside his horse.

He suits late-Victorian European and American city scenes, station forecourts, market squares and parade routes. Pair him with a horse and a crowd of period pedestrians to build a convincing 1880s street policing vignette.
