A portly 1920s patrolman fast asleep on a small stool, head tipped back, eyes shut and both hands folded across his belly. He wears a peaked cap with a shield badge, a long double-breasted tunic with a cross-strap, uniform trousers and heavy service shoes, with a nightstick hooked at his side.

The slouched pose, sagging jowls and drooping moustache make the whole piece read as comedy at a glance, and the deep coat folds hold shadow well under a dark wash.
