A tall timber oil derrick of latticed square section, tapering to a crown block platform, with a ladder running the full height on one face and tensioned guy wires anchored out to the deck. Drilling gear sits in the shadow at the derrick foot.

Attached at the base is a clapboard engine house with a pitched shingle roof, plank siding and multi-pane windows, all set on a boarded plank deck. The weathered brown timber throughout gives it a working, oil-soaked look.

Rigs like this defined American oil fields from the 1860s to the 1930s. It makes a striking tall feature on a period industrial layout, an old-west or early-industrial diorama, or a boom-town scene beside tank cars and teamster wagons.
