This asset is a polished HO (1:87) master of a generic wood-fired short-line steam locomotive paired with a separately modeled tender textured to suggest stacked wood. The design captures the silhouette and working details of early 20th-century short-line and logging practice rather than matching a single preserved prototype, emphasising elements that read clearly at HO scale while avoiding fragile freestanding filigree.

Distinctive modeled features

- Riveted cylindrical boiler: rivet relief and plate seams are deliberately sized to read through paint and weathering while maintaining filleted transitions to reduce fragile thin points. The rivet and seam scale has been chosen to survive common hobby printing tolerances.

- Raised steam dome and valve housings: a forward-positioned dome with simplified low-relief valve housings and accessible routing for steam pipes along the boiler side create a convincing working profile without delicate separate parts.

- Tall smokestack: a straight reinforced smokestack with a strengthened base flange reflects wood-fired practice and reduces risk of damage during handling and printing.

- Exposed external piping and simplified fittings: external steam lines, valve housings and handrail mounts are modeled to visually read at HO while avoiding long unsupported spans. Fine details are given small fillets or simplified geometry to keep them printable.

- Oversized driving wheels and side rods: driving wheels are modeled with clearly defined spokes and simplified side rods to preserve the external mechanical look while avoiding long thin connecting rods that tend to fail or require heavy supports.

- Open rear cab: the cab opens to the rear with simplified floor and framing; interior controls are suggested with low-relief shapes rather than fragile knobs and levers so the cab reads convincingly when painted.

- Tender: modeled as a separate mesh with a recessed load area textured to represent stacked wood planks rather than a coal bunker. The plank texture is scaled to remain legible at HO and designed with printable thickness and slightly rounded edges.

Scale conversion guidance

- Master prepared for HO (1:87). To convert to another scale, uniformly scale the file in your slicer by ratio target_denominator / 87 (for example, to 1:76 multiply by 87/76 ≈ 1.144; to 1:160 multiply by 87/160 ≈ 0.544). After scaling, inspect thin details under ~0.3 mm and consider thickening or reinforcing for your chosen printing process.

Printing notes and orientations

- Orient the locomotive on its side to reduce supports across the smokestack and running gear for filament printers. Use medium-density supports under the smokestack base and undercarriage where required. Print the tender flat with the recessed load facing up when practical to minimize intrusive supports inside the load area.

- For fine-detail resin printing, place supports at the smokestack base, lower cab corners and undercarriage points and use fine touchpoints to preserve rivet, pipe and plank texture. Long side rods may require support or slight reinforcement after scaling.

Finishing and weathering

- The rivet texture, wheel spokes and tender plank detail respond well to light drybrushing and washes to emphasize depth. The tender’s stacked-wood texture takes weathering pigments and drybrushing nicely to suggest charred, aged timber.

Assembly and compatibility

- A shallow coupling seat is modeled to align the locomotive and tender; no specific coupler pocket or standard coupler hardware is provided so you can adapt the parts to your layout’s coupler type or glue the models for static display. If you require fitted coupler pockets or prototype-specific modifications, request a custom conversion.

Prototype notes and provenance

- The mesh intentionally captures character elements common to wood-fired short-line and logging engines from the early 1900s rather than matching a named prototype. Stage1 metadata shows this item originates from a legacy project stub. If exact prototype fidelity or measured drawings are required, request a bespoke project before purchase.
